Robert Joseph Fennell, 88, of Benson, Minnesota, died Friday, July 19, 2019, at the St. Cloud Hospital. 

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 26, 2019, at St. Malachy Catholic Church in Clontarf. 

Interment will be in the Church Cemetery. Arrangements are with Zniewski Funeral Home.

Loran and Anita Matteson

Loran Cyril Matteson, 71, was born August 7, 1947 at Sisseton, SD to Myron and Mardella Bonzelet Matteson.

Anita Louise Matteson, 78, was born March 1, 1941 to Norman and Ellen Reddekopp in Tillamook, OR. 

Anita passed away July 15, 2019 from lung cancer at Chahalem Health and Rehab Center in Newberg, OR.  Loran passed away at the same facility eight days later, July 23, 2019, from a heart attack and lung cancer.  Loran and Anita resided in Salem, OR.

Loran attended Rosholt Public School, Rosholt, SD, from grades 1-9.  The family moved to Benson in 1962.  Loran graduated from Benson High School, Benson, Minnesota, in 1965. He served in the US Air Force from 1966-1969, where he was trained in crash and fire rescue control and jet mechanics. He served one year in Libya, Africa. He was a member of the reserves for two years.

 

He was married to Jacqueline Weathers of Salem, OR in 1971. They later divorced.  He has one adopted daughter, Kelly Rae Weathers Matteson. 

Loran owned and operated the Auburn Arco Station for seven years.  He was a co-owner of a commercial fishing boat and went salmon fishing on the Pacific Ocean for four years.  Loran joined his fishing partner in the gas station business until Loran had a stroke in March of 2010.

He married Anita Louise Campbell Nye,  October 20, 1989, in Reno, NV.  Anita was raised and received her education in Cloverdale, OR, and graduated from Nestucca High School in 1959.  She attended Chemeketa Community College in Salem, where she received her associate degree in business. 

Anita had been widowed twice.  She had two children, Tamara (Tami) Campbell and Thomas Nye. Tamara married Brian Eggman (both deceased).  Anita was employed as an accountant/bookkeeper at Mountain Fir Lumber Company in Independence, OR, for several years and as trucking office manager at Freres Bros. Lumber Company in Lyons, OR, for many years.  Loran and Anita retired in June, 2011.  They were members of Bent 8 Car Club.  They traveled in Canada and Alaska in 2011.  They made numerous trips to Minnesota to visit family.

Loran is survived by his mother, Mardella Matteson of Benson, his sister and brother-in-law, Lynne and Ronald Orvik of Benson, daughter, Kelly Matteson Hill of Salem, OR, two nephews and a niece and their families in Minnesota, and numerous other relatives. He is preceded in death by his father, Myron Matteson.

Anita is survived by her son, Thomas Nye, of Eugene, OR, her sister and brother-in-law, Cathie and Terry Barth, of Hillsboro, OR, her grandchildren, David Eggman & Jerad Eggman of Newport, OR, her three great grandchildren, Josephine, Gracie and Cayden and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Ellen Reddekopp, her daughter, Tami Eggman, and her two brothers, Gene Reddekopp and Norman Reddekopp, Jr.

Memorial services in Oregon will be held at a later date.

Dale Allan Burns

Dale Allan Burns

Dale Allan Burns, 66, of Benson, Minnesota, died Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at his home. Visitation was one hour (12:30-1:30)  prior to the service held at Zniewski Funeral Home Chapel in Benson at 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 29, 2019. Interment was in the Swift Falls Cemetery in Camp Lake Township, Swift County.

Dale Allan Burns was born  October 21, 1952 in Benson and died July 24th, 2019, he was 66 years old. He was baptized at Swift Falls Lutheran Church (now Shepherd of the Hills) and confirmed at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church. He spent a great deal of his childhood on his grandparents’ farm in rural Swift Falls. He was a quiet child and very good sneak, so Uncle Milton gave him the nick name “Pussy Cat” and it stuck with him.

He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army 1971. He had a variety of jobs in his life and lived in California, Hawaii, Nevada, Florida, Oregon and Minnesota.

He married Darlene Stubblefield in 1978, but later divorced. He was a long-haul truck driver and for many years he worked for Health Examinetics Inc. He drove on a majority of the Interstates and highways that crisscrossed the United States, and he made it to every state except Alaska.

He enjoyed good conversation and told stories that had good humor. Dale gave up the life on the road and bought a house in Benson and was very helpful to his mother, as he was key to helping her stay in her home.

He enjoyed his friends, though he was a very private person, and he was a bit of a prankster. He loved to go to garage sales and was quite the collector, which was a stark contrast to living out of three suitcases and duffel bag while on the road for over 20+ years.

He was preceded in death by his father John W. Burns, stepfather Helmer J. Offerdahl, brothers Donald E. Burns and Steven R. Offerdahl, and grandparents.

He is survived by his mother Anna C. Offerdahl, his sister Sharon (Scott) Offerdahl Ketchum, nephews: Sean Paul Burns, Jeff (Sherley Xq) Offerdahl, Matt (Angie) Offerdahl, niece Jennifer (Mike) Offerdahl Anderson, great-nephew Shane Burns, great great nephew Daven Burns, and dear friend Marla Forbord.

Marjorie Lucille Newell

Marjorie Lucille Newell, 93, of Benson, Minnesota died at her home Sunday, July 28, 2019.  Visitation was from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 1, 2019, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson.  Interment was in the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church Cemetery in De Graff.

Marjorie Lucille Newell was born July 14, 1926 in De Graff, Minnesota, the daughter of Frank P. and Loretta (Byrne) Newell. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in De Graff. She attended elementary school at District 28 Country School and De Graff Public School, and later graduated from Benson Senior High School.

She lived in Benson and worked at Ben Franklin,  Benson Grain Elevator, Chevy Garage in Benson, and in the food service at Benson High School. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church. She volunteered at Prairie Five. She enjoyed her involvement with groups at the church and watching the Minnesota Twins on television.

She was called from this life Sunday morning, July 28 at her home in Benson. She attained the age of 93 years and 14 days.

Marjorie is survived by her nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Loretta Newell, her sisters, Mary Ann Knutson, Kathleen Newell, a brother Jim Newell, a brother-in-law Eldon Knutson, a sister-in-law Jean Newell, and a niece Jeanie Newell. Blessed be her memory.

Renetta D. Schliemann

Renetta D. Schliemann
October 18, 1921 • August 1, 2019

Renetta D. Schliemann, 97, of Benson, Minnesota died Thursday evening, August 1, 2019 at Homestead Place North in Benson.  Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m., Thursday, August 8 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Visitation will resume from 10-11 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11 a.m., Friday, August 9 at the church.  Pastor Jason Wolter will officiate.  Burial will be in the Appleton City Cemetery.

Renetta Dorothea Schliemann was born October 18, 1921 in Shible Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of Adolph and Augusta (Stock) Munstermann.  She was baptized November 13, 1921 by Rev. Wechter and was confirmed April 14, 1945 by Rev. Paul Gierke, both at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Shible Township. 
October 15, 1941, Renetta was united in marriage to Manville C. Schliemann at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Shible Township by Rev. Paul Gierke.  They shared 62 ½ happy years together and were blessed with five children.

Renetta attended Shible Immanuel Parochial School through eighth grade and Appleton Public High School through ninth grade.  Renetta did domestic housework, babysitting, worked at the Big Stone Canning Factory and Fingerhut.  She loved the farm life and most enjoyed milking cows and working alongside Manville in the field and barn.  She had a big garden and did a lot of canning, freezing and pickling. Renetta especially enjoyed decorating and baking for the Christmas holiday.

Renetta served on the school board for Big Stone County District 52, Artichoke Township. She was an active member in the Ladies Guild at Grace Lutheran Church in Correll and the LWML at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  She was a member of the Homemaker’s Club and Birthday Club in Artichoke Township, Big Stone County.  In retirement, Renetta and Manville did a lot of fishing, gardening, quilting, and then they would fish some more.  She enjoyed getting together with neighbors and friends to play whist, pinochle, setting puzzles and embroidery. In her free time she would read the newspapers, her bible, and daily devotions.

Renetta was called from this life  August 1, 2019, surrounded by her family, at Homestead North in Benson.  She attained 97 years, nine months, and 15 days of age. 

Renetta is survived by her children: Myron Schliemann of Appleton, Eunice (Arlyn) Sachs of Otsego, Donna (Gene) Anderson of Benson, Lorene Thomas of Leonard, ND and Alan (Jean) Schliemann of Benson; 19 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; siblings: Evelyn Giese, Verna Quandt, and Adolph Munstermann, Jr.; brother-in-law, Elroy (Mary) Schliemann; sister-in-law, Ellen Munstermann; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Manville; parents, Adolph and Augusta Munstermann; parents-in-law, Adolph and Amanda Schliemann; brothers: Walter (Mabel) Munstermann, Elmer (Emily) Munstermann, Ronald (Vivilor) Munstermann, Albert  (Vivilore)  Munstermann, and Melvin Munstermann; sister,  Bertha (William) Harste; sisters-in-law, Cheryl Munstermann, Bernice (John) Koosmann, Delores (Victor) Storm, and Ardith (David) Hills; brothers-in-law: Ray Giese, Donald Quandt, and Harry (Evelyn) Schliemann; son-in-law, Erland Wateland; grandson, Miles Thomas; granddaughter, Lonetta Schliemann; great-granddaughters: Candice and Tina Bruzek; and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn Louise Stone, 96, of Benson, Minn., passed away Tuesday evening, August 6, 2019 at Meadow Lane Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Benson.

 

Evelyn Louise Stone was born on October 13, 1922 in Benson, Minnesota to Commodore Jr. Smith and Anna Edith (Cooley) Smith. She was confirmed June of 1942 by Rev. Richard Johnson and baptized on August 23, 1981 by Pastor Dale Paulsen in Benson, MN. She grew up in Swift County and the Six Mile Grove Township.  She attended grade school in Swift Co. District 41 and graduated from Benson High School in May 1940.

 

On June 12, 1942 Evelyn was united in marriage to Albin Emanuel Stone by Rev. Richard Johnson at Trinity Lutheran Church. They were blessed with 36 years of marriage. Evelyn worked as a dishwasher for 1 year in 1940 and was a waitress at Paris Café.  She was a Sunday School Superintendent for many years. Evelyn was a member of the Assembly of God Church. She was involved in the Women’s Ministries, ARC, and Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL). Evelyn enjoyed serving the Lord, gardening, bird watching, Bible study, early morning walks, writing club, and word finds. She loved her family dearly.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband Albin Stone, parents Commodore and Anna, daughter Marilyn, sisters Helen (Charles) Prusia, Alice (Alfred) Hagen, and Phyllis (Andrew) Stone, brother Milburn (Winifred) Smith, and son-in-law Kevin Lindstrom.

 

She is survived by her 2 sons: Lawrence (Ann) Stone, Woodland Park, CO, Michael (Georgene) Stone, Fargo, ND; 3 daughters: Valerie (Steven) Anderson, St. Cloud, MN, Toni Lindstrom, Benson, MN, and Rosanne Stone, Benson, MN; 4 grandchildren: Derrick (Christina) Lindstrom, Deidre (Kevin) King, Erica (Dale) Anderson, and Matthew (Danielle) Stone; and great-grandchildren: Elenora and Charles Lindstrom, Ellie King, and Benjamin and Natalie Anderson.

Connie Martin

Connie Martin, age 65 of Benson, MN, formerly of Osakis passed into her new life early Tuesday, August 6, 2019 from her home near Benson, MN after a brave battle with cancer.

 

Connie Jean Chapman was born on March 16, 1954 in Alexandria, MN to Carroll and Joan (Bodanski) Chapman. 

She graduated from Osakis High School with the Class of 1972 and attended Alexandria Vocational School. 

In 1973 she married Michael Granlund and they had two daughters, Jennifer and Valerie. 

They lived in Minneapolis and in addition to raising her children, Connie also worked at Northrup King and later at Northern States Power. 

After parting ways with Michael, Connie married Albert Kuroyama in 1980 and had a daughter, Kecia.

After several years Connie and Albert grew apart and in 1989, she married her soul mate, Daniel Martin.

They lived in Brooklyn Park and had two sons, Andrew and Erich Martin. 

Connie worked in the corporate office for One Potato Two.  

In 1998 when the family relocated to Benson, MN, an opportunity arose and Daniel and Connie became owners of Monitor Printing and worked together there for many years until Connie’s illness.

During her time living in Benson, Connie also worked at Runnings Farm and Fleet as a cashier. 

 

Connie could knit, crochet and do needlepoint, and over the years made many Christmas stockings and gifts for family and friends. 

She also liked to do family ancestry, spending many hours researching her family’s histories. 

Connie was a sports fan, especially for the MN Twins and was also a great bowler, going several times to the National finals.

Connie enjoyed camping, fishing, racing snowmobiles, going to stock car races and playing Facebook games. 

She was supportive of the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts while her children were involved and was a lifelong animal lover. 

Card games, gardening and bird-watching were her most recent past times. 

She was the most wonderful and precious wife, mother, grandma, sister and daughter a family could have and she will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

 

Left to mourn her passing is her husband, Daniel Martin of Benson; children, Jennifer (John McCadden) Anderson and Valerie (Glen) Christensen, all of Sleepy Eye, Kecia (Brandon) McKeon of Innver Grove Heights, Andrew Martin of Sauk Rapids and Erich Martin of Benson; 15 grandchildren; her mother, Joan Pollard of Osakis; siblings, Steven Chapman of Polson, MT, Sharon Drum of Alexandria, MN and Julie (Joy Gibbon) Chapman of Chesapeake, VA; several nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her father, Carroll Chapman.

 

A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 2:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Osakis with Rev. Randy Knuth officiating. 

A gathering time for family and friends begins at 1:00 pm at the church. 

Inurnment is at the West Evergreen Cemetery in Osakis, MN with a reception following at the church fellowship hall. 

Urn bearers are Andrew and Erich Martin.

Doreen Mae Touhey

Doreen Mae Touhey was born on November 11, 1954 in Melrose, Minnesota, the daughter of Elner Joseph and Deloris Ione (Swenson) Strom. She was baptized on November 27, 1954 at 1st Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake, Minn. She grew up in Barrett, MN and attended Barrett High school and Wadena Tech. 

 

On June 22, 1974 Doreen was united in marriage to Michael Brian Touhey at St. Charles Catholic Church in Herman, Minn. They were blessed with 45 years of marriage. Doreen worked for 37 years at Golden Living Nursing Home in Benson.  Doreen enjoyed her weekly Bible study sessions.  She loved tending to her flowers, riding motorcycle, and spending time with her grandkids and family.  She also enjoyed trips to Iowa to visit dear friends.  She always looked forward to her cycle trips out west with her husband and close friends.  (But not without her lipstick and jewelry.)

 

She was preceded in death by her parents Elner and Deloris Strom, father-in-law Duane Touhey, and many aunts and uncles.

 

She is survived by her husband Michael Touhey; children Melissa (Eric) Touhey – Ziegler of Danvers and Chelsey (Brent) Hanson of Benson, 4 grandchildren: Madison Ziegler, McKenna Ziegler, Jack Hanson, and Sawyer Hanson, her brother Eldon (Doreen) Strom, Barrett, MN, along with other family and close friends.

Cory Lynn Braaten, 46, of Benson, Minn., formerly of Carlos, died Sunday, August 11, 2019, surrounded by her loving family, at Knute-Nelson Care Center in Alexandria. 

 

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., Friday, August 16, 2019 at the Benson High School. 

 

Visitation will continue 10-11 a.m., followed by the Funeral Service at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 17, 2019, at the Benson High School. 

 

Interment will be in Pleasant Mound Cemetery in Carlos.  In lieu of flowers, Memorials are preferred to Prairie Five and Friends of the Library.

Cory was born on September 29, 1972, in Alexandria, MN to James and Debra (Eaton) Braaten. She was baptized February 4, 1973 at Carlos Trinity Lutheran Church by Rev. Johnson. Cory lived the entirety of her childhood on the Braaten’s hobby farm. She attended Carlos Elementary School, and then went on to Central Middle School in Alexandria, MN. She graduated from Jefferson Senior High, and went on to pursue a degree in Elementary Education at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. After college, she found her first teaching job at Northside Elementary School in Benson, MN. She stayed at Northside for her entire teaching career of 24 years.

 

Cory enjoyed helping others through her service at Prairie Five, Friends of the Library, Women of Today, and Kid Day, among many other organizations. She also helped out at the Spelling Bee, Track and Field meets, and the backpack program. She coached both basketball and volleyball during her teaching career. She loved kayaking, playing games, watching movies, camping, and shopping. She adored her family and enjoyed spending time with them, along with her numerous friends.

 

Cory is survived by her parents, Jim and Debbie Braaten; sisters, Tracy Braaten, and Cary (Steve) Jobe; nephew, Dalton Jobe; niece, Katie Jobe; and many other loving relatives and friends. Cory was preceded in death by her grandparents, Leo and Irene Eaton, as well as Palmer and Margaret Braaten; aunts, Mary Braaten, Irene Braaten, Linda Braaten, and Marilyn Creamer; uncles, Gene Braaten, Gordon Zimmel, and Dave Creamer; and cousins, Kim Tisland and Steven Braaten.

Dennis Roger Plucker, Sr., 81, of rural Murdock, Minn., died Saturday, July 27, 2019, at his home.

Dennis Roger Plucker, Sr. was born on February 7, 1938 to Enno and Ruby Plucker. He was raised on a farm near Chancellor, South Dakota, with his five siblings. In his formable years the family worked the farm and they were taught the value of hard work and the importance of honesty and integrity. 

 

As a child, Dennis loved riding his favorite horse, life on the farm, and was known as somewhat of a prankster.

 

In 1955, at the age of 17, Dennis followed in his older brother’s footsteps and enlisted in the United States Navy stationed on the USS WASP.  He was honorably discharged in 1969 as a reservist. During his service to the United States Dennis visited nearly every major port city in the world.

 

While stationed on the east coast Dennis met and married Katherine and they had four children. They later divorced. Dennis married Audrey in 1968 and together they had three children. They divorced in 1981. Following his service in the Navy Dennis worked a variety of jobs; he was a well driller for many years and most recently drove truck retiring at the age of 75. He took pride in this work but it was not his passion. His passion could be seen where he lived in the country. He loved farming, raising livestock, growing Alfalfa, and bailing hay. He enjoyed repairing John Deere tractors and shooting guns.

 

Dennis was an imperfect man with regrets but he did not regret his passion for farming, he loved to get up early, spending the day engaged in the toils of farming. His faith may not have been visible to all, but in the end he held to the lessons he learned early in life.  He will be remembered by his family for his sense of humor, as a story teller, and a protector. He passed away at his beloved farm near Murdock, Minnesota, on July 27, 2019.  He attained the age of 81 years, 5 months, and 20 days. 

 

Dennis is survived by his children: Dennis Roger Plucker Jr (Janette) of New Sweden, Maine, Diane Bryant (Paul) of Newberry Port, Massachusetts, Nancy Turner of Beverly, Massachusetts, Dorothy Plucker of Peabody, Massachusetts,  Ronald Plucker (Cathy) of New London, Minnesota, Holly Johnson of Lafayette, Minnesota, Michele Wilson (Dan) of St. Paul; Grandchildren: Lisa Plucker McLellan, Frank Plucker, Arial Plucker, Jocelyn Turner Baker, Derek Turner, Albert Turner, Ashley Plucker, Nicholas Plucker, Mitchell Wilson, Kendell Vangsness, and Paige Vangsness; Step-Grandchildren: Wendy Beaudine Zahn, Leah Frandsen, Aaron Wilson, and Candace Wilson; Great-Grandchildren Joseph, Christopher, Molly, Clara, Benjamin, John, Jack, Ella, Samuel, Mason, Arianna, Chloe, and Gemma; Step-Great-Grandchildren: Isaac, Kali, Seth, Cody, Kylie, and Daniel; Siblings: Gene (Linda) Plucker of Canastota, South Dakota, Carol (Lee) Wilts of Lago Vista, Texas, and Jane Wilts of Broomfield Colorado. Phyllis Flaten

Phyllis Flaten (Hammargren) passed away peacefully on Friday, August 16, 2019. 

 

Phyllis was born in Harris, Minnesota on December 8, 1931 to Marion (Danell) and Edwin Hammargren.

 

Phyllis graduated from North Branch High School and later graduated from the Swedish Hospital nursing program in Minneapolis in 1952. 

 

On February 14, 1953 she married the love of her life, Roger Flaten.  They enjoyed years of traveling and golfing together. 

 

In Minnesota, Phyllis enjoyed time with the family on Lake Linka and after retirement relaxed with long walks on the beaches of Florida. 

 

She is survived by husband, Roger; children, Cheryl (Dean) & Kenneth (Pam); grandchildren, Devin, Lee, and Christopher. 

 

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Darrell Hovland

Darrell Hovland of Alexandria, Minnesota and formerly of Montevideo, passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at Bethany on the Lake Assisted Living in Alexandria at the age of 90.

Memorial services were held Monday, August 19, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Anderson - TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo with Pastor Jeff Fitzkappes officiating.  Burial was in Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Minneota.

Darrell was born May 18, 1929 in Minneota, Minnesota to Louis and Sara (Severson) Hovland.  He attended and graduated from Minneota High School.  Following high school he farmed at home, and also spent a year working at Boeing in Washington while living with his sister, Lila. 

September 30, 1967, Darrell was united in marriage to Audrey (Halvorson) in Minneapolis. They lived and farmed near Minneota for a number of years before moving to Benson where Darrell worked at Bertas at a farm implement.  He was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson and spent time doing custodial work there as well.  In 2003, they moved to Montevideo and became members of Trinity Lutheran Church there.  While in Montevideo, Darrell worked at Fiesta Car Wash until they moved to Alexandria in 2010 where he resided until his passing.  Darrell loved talking to people and had the ability to spark up a conversation with anyone he came in contact with.  He enjoyed watching all varieties of sports, including Minneota High School sports, taking walks around the neighborhood and nursing home in Alexandria, playing Bingo, and playing many card games and board games with his granddaughter, Bailee.

Darrell is survived by his son, Jason (Kim) Hovland of Alexandria; granddaughter, Bailee of Alexandria; sisters: Arlene Tollefson of Montevideo and Lila Smith of WA; sisters-in-law: Marie Hovland of AZ and Janice Hovland of Montevideo; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Audrey in 2014; siblings; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy F. Thedin

Dorothy Frances Demo was born on April 29, 1927, in Benson, MN,. to Alice Nina (née Buroker) and James Bernard Demo. She spent her early years on the Swift County farm of her parents and grandparents, where she and her twin brother, DeWayne, were the oldest of ten children. In the early 1940’s, she moved to St. Paul, MN, with her family and attended Mechanic Arts High School, graduating in 1945. After graduation, Dorothy worked as a hostess for Rene Boursier’s Restaurant in downtown St. Paul. She attended Minnesota School of Business, later working as a secretary at Johnson High School in St. Paul and George T. Walker Company in Minneapolis, MN.

On November 17, 1956, she married Glenn Thedin at Plymouth Congregational Church in St. Paul. In 1958, Dorothy and Glenn relocated to Morris, MN, with their daughter, Tammy. Their sons, David and Mark, were born in Morris. Dorothy worked as a secretary for the family business, later earning her real estate license. Dorothy was a 60-year member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 5039.

Dorothy, affectionately known as ‘Dot’, loved music, dancing, and dining. She was an avid reader of newspapers, magazines, and books, both fiction and non-fiction. She enjoyed trips and family get-togethers, especially for picnics, parades, and fairs.

Dorothy Frances (Demo) Thedin passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2019, at Arbor Park Assisted Living Center in Moorhead, MN. She will be missed for her sharp wit, kind heart, and indomitable spirit.

Dorothy is survived by her three children, Tammy (Lee) Goracke, David Thedin, and Mark Thedin; granddaughter, Melissa (James) Chalmers; grandsons, Julian Goracke, and William Goracke; and two great-granddaughters, Sierra Schlief and Winona Chalmers; sister, Cheryl (Loren) Richert; brothers, Charles (Aphie) Demo, and Dale Demo; sister-in-law, Florence Demo; and brother-in-law, James Thedin; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; her parents; her sister, Rosemary St. George; brothers, DeWayne, Merlin, James, Roger, and Rolland “Billy” Demo; nieces, Judy Demo, Karen St.George, and Kathy Demo; and nephew, Jerry “Sonny” Demo.

A special thanks to Dorothy’s caregivers, especially Dominic, Janice, Carissa, and JoAnne.

A Visitation for Dorothy will be one hour prior to her funeral service.

Her Funeral Service will be Saturday, August 24, 2019, at 1:00 PM, in Pilgrim Congregational Church, Benson, MN.

 

 

Burial will be in Summit Cemetery in Morris.

Dr. Douglas Coy

Dr. Douglas Coy, formerly of Danvers, MN, died August 10; he was 91 years old.  

Douglas graduated from Benson High School in 1946, he attended St. John's University and Marquette University Medical School.  

He served in the Army, stationed in CA.  He moved his family to Grand Rapids in 1960 and practiced medicine there until his retirement in 1993.  

After retirement, he lived in rural Deer River, MN.  

He is survived by his wife, Janet, six children, seven grandchildren, several "great grands" and his sister, Barbara Coy McGinnis of Morris and her family.

Betty Lou Loechner

Betty Lou Loechner

Betty Lou Loechner, 80, was born February 9, 1939, in Lancaster, California, the daughter of Charles and Mary Elizabeth (Woodworth) Washburn. She was baptized in California and confirmed on her birthday in 1944. She grew up in California, graduated from high school and completed one year of college.

She was united in marriage to William Loechner, March 7, 1983 in Northridge, Los Angeles, California. She lived most of her life in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California. She was an independent contracted accountant and she served as a courier business for several corporations.  She moved to Benson and lived with her granddaughter Michelle and her husband Nefi Ibarra.

Betty enjoyed gardening and watching TV. She loved her pets and spending time with her family. She was called from this life  Saturday evening, August 31, 2019 at the Swift County Benson Hospital surrounded by several of her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters: Karen (Mike) Hessel, and Judy Norry, both of California; 11  grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren; her siblings: Raymond (Geniva) Washburn of Sacramento, California, Ethel Sandova of Little Rock, California, and Patricia (Curt) Tillary of Sacramento, California. She was preceded in death by her husband William Loechner III, her parents Charles and Mary, a sister Colleen, a brother Chuck, a son William Aguirre, and a daughter Kathleen (Aguirre) Edwards. Blessed be her memory.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 2 p.m. at the First Evangelical Free Church in Benson. Zniewski Funeral Home of Benson is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Morris W. Steckman

Morris W. Steckman

Morris W. Steckman, 68, of St. Cloud, Minnesota, passed peacefully surrounded by loving family Sunday, September 1, 2019 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Funeral services were Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Peace United Church of Christ, St. Cloud. Visitation was from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Morris was born February 20, 1951 in Le Sueur, Minnesota to Willard and Eva (Horneman) Steckman. He graduated from Le Sueur High School in 1969. Morris Willard Steckman served his country, beginning March 19,1970, with the USAF 764th Radar Squadron at Saint Albans AFS in 1970-1971. Morris transferred to Hahn AFB in Kirchberg, Germany until returning stateside in 1973. Sgt. Morris Steckman was discharged March 18, 1976.

Morris was a master of nearly all things construction. Most recently Morris found passion in creating custom cutting boards, including a cutting board that won the 2019 National Veterans Creative Arts competition.

Morris married Deanna,  March 23, 1991, at Salem Lutheran Church in West St. Paul. They loved exploring new communities, purchasing eight homes over 28 years. Together they enjoyed antiquing, attending rummage and antique sales. They enjoyed riding motorcycles, as well as their bicycles! Over the last decade, more focus was placed on woodworking, family, gardening, and NDSU Bison Football.

Morris is survived by his wife Deanna; children: Nathan Steckman, Jeanne (Travis) Gran, Sarah (Cory) Lewis, Austin Johnson, Angela (Wade) Weinell; grandchildren: Narissa, Samantha, Eli, Arianna, Deondre, Noah, Anjonique, Makyla, Calvin, Cody, Cory Jr. “CJ”, D’maurie, Darius, Emma, D’von; great grandson, Radlee; siblings, John (Betty) Steckman, Diana Cole and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Nicholas and brother-in-law, Stan Cole.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Disabled American Veterans.

Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud.
