Marjorie “Marge” Evenson

MARJORIE A. L. EVENSON
January 18, 1928 • October 10, 2018

Marjorie “Marge” Evenson, 90, Benson, Minnesota, died Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at home under Hospice care.

Visitation was from 5-7 p.m., Sunday, October 14, 2018, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Visitation continued from 10-11 a.m., followed by the Funeral Service at 11 a.m., Monday, October 15, 2018, at the church.  Interment was in Swenoda Lutheran Cemetery.

Marjorie Ann Lou (Holstad) Evenson was born January 18, 1928, to Agnes (Norby) Holstad and Henry Holstad.  She was baptized and confirmed at Swenoda Lutheran Church.  Marge grew up on a farm in Swift County where she helped her dad with farm work.  She dreamed of becoming a dancer, and although she never became one, she did marry her life-long dancing partner, Floyd O. Evenson, at Our Redeemer’s parsonage December 7, 1944.  They were married for almost 60 years.

Early in their marriage, they started out on a farm near Benson.  They moved to Montevideo where she worked in various jobs while raising Sharon and Jeanne.  In 1952, they managed to buy a small farm south of Benson, living there for the next 55 years. Gradually, the farm expanded as well as the family where five more children were born, Ron, Bonnie, Becky, Michelle, and Troy.

Marge was a true partner in farming, assisting in the chores, raising chickens, tilling, plowing, baling, tending a garden and preserving the produce. She made every celebration special for her children.  She sewed garments for her children as well as her grandchildren.  She was an excellent baker, especially bread, and we anticipated the smell and taste of her cinnamon rolls when we got off the school bus.  Marge believed in the power of prayer and taught us to pray and led through example, a strong faith.

She was passionate about her family and instilled in each of us the importance of family values.  Marge was active in church circle, ORW, and co-chaired the Smorgasbord dinner.

After her children were older, she took swimming lessons at the Benson pool. She joined a bowling club and enjoyed time with her bowling buddies.  Marge belonged to a Homemakers group and, later, Coterie.  She took up golf late in life.  It was a sad day when Marge could no longer golf.  She often watched it on TV.
Marge was a strong woman to the end, overcoming many health problems, including cancer, and the loss of many loved ones.  She will always be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and sister-in-law.

Marge was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; daughter, Linda Marie; parents Agnes and Henry Holstad; sister, Virginia (Orel) Evenson; brother, Darwin; sisters Gloria and Violet (in infancy); sister in laws and brother in laws, Amy and Louis Stay; Viola and Melvin Norby; Orel and Virginia Evenson; Verna and Luverne Myhre; Raynold and Carol Evenson; and Dean Evenson.

She is survived by her children: Sharon (Ron) Cin, Glenwood; Jeanne Baynes, Eden Prairie; Ron Evenson, Benson; Bonnie Cruz, Grapevine, TX; Becky Minnerath, Eden Prairie; Michelle Arntzen, Woodbury; and Troy (Ileana) Evenson, Chaska; brother, Dennis (Karen) Holstad, Edina.  Her grandchildren:  Wayde (Stephanie) Cin; Ryan (Theresa) Cin; Melissa (James) Rouse; Reid (Michelle) Baynes; Reis (Maia) Baynes; Angela (Mark) Haffely; Kristine (Erik) Hanson; Matthew (Leslie) Cruz; Michon (Derek) Nelson; Marisa Cruz; Ashley Minnerath; Grant Minnerath; Andrea Arntzen; Mitchell Evenson; Lauren Evenson; Kennedi Evenson; Bella Bryan; Max Bryan and 20 great grandchildren; sisters in law: Shirley (Dean) Evenson; Mardell (Keith) Kennedy; LaVina Evenson; and Violet (Bud) Jerve and many nieces and nephews.

MARY ANN FATH, CSJ
February 15, 1934 • December 9, 2018

Mary Ann Fath, CSJ of St. Paul, died peacefully December 9, 2018 at Carondelet Village in St. Paul.

This witty "tell it like it is," lover of the land was born on a farm just east of De Graff, Minnesota, February 15, 1934.

Mass of Christian Burial was held 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 14, 2018 at Our Lady of the Presentation Chapel, 1884 Randolph Avenue, St. Paul with Visitation at 10:00 a.m preceding Mass. Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights

She attended high school at St. Mary's Academy in Graceville. It was there that she met the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and at the young age of 18, went to St. Paul to enter the community. Her first vocational work began in food services for St. Mary Convent, St. Paul Seminary, and St. Joseph Academy in St. Paul, and later at St. James in Grand Forks, ND. From there Mary Ann found a long and lasting home at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, where she spent the next 44 years working in a variety of departments including: the library, purchasing, receiving and the mail room.

Her greatest joy came from the nearly 40 years she spent working in the greenhouse and with the grounds keeping crew.   She loved to be outdoors.  In 1987, she was named Staff Person of the Year for her service "above and beyond." Affectionally nicknamed "Sister John Deere," Mary Ann could always be found tending, planting, pruning and weeding, to which she would remark, "I often wish God hadn't made it so difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff in his big garden."
