OBITUARY
 
Winifred Elaine O’Leary, age 93, of Danvers, MN, died Saturday, February 18, 2017, at   Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, MN.

Visitation will be Monday, February 20, 2017, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson.  Visitation will continue on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at the Church Of The Visitation Catholic Church in Danvers. Interment will be in the Church Of The Visitation Catholic Church Cemetery in Danvers. Arrangements are with Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.
 
Winifred Elaine (Mortenson) O’Leary was born April 13, 1923, in Cashel Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of Christian Miller and Josephine Gerna (Brenden) Mortenson.  She was baptized in 1923 by Rev. Strand at Lutheran Immanuel Church and confirmed in 1937 by Rev. Kaatrud at the Lutheran Church in Benson.  She grew up in Cashel Township, attended country school, and graduated from Benson High School.  On July 28, 1942, Winifred was united in marriage to James Michael Bernard O’Leary by Father McCall at the Church of the Visitation in Danvers. This union was blessed with more than 39 years of marriage, 10 children, 36 grandchildren, and 54 great-grandchildren.  They farmed in Danvers and Winifred was a wonderful housewife.  She was a member of the Church Ladies Aid, Homemaker’s Club, and Mother’s Club.  Among the many things she enjoyed were gardening, golfing, dancing, bowling, and spending time with family and friends.
 
Winifred died peacefully on February 18, 2017, surrounded by family, at Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, MN.  She attained the age of 93 years, 10 months and 5 days.  She is survived by 9 children and their spouses: Michael (Nancy) O’Leary of Starbuck, Betty (Roger) Anderson of Camarillo, CA, Donald (Beth) O’Leary of Summerfield, FL, William (Kathy) O’Leary of Starbuck, Ann (Gary) Krueger of Willmar, Barb (Mark) Amundson of Ortonville, Karen (Dean) Hippen of Prior Lake, Kevin (Pam) O’Leary of Rice, and Kathy (Jason) Mikulski of Bloomington; 36 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Roger Thue; one sister: Peggy Skarsten of Benson; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Winifred was preceded in death by her husband, James, on November 23, 1981; daughter, Patricia; a baby boy; her parents, Christ and Josie; brother, Lowell; sister, Barb Reil; and special friend, LeRoy Janssen.

OBITUARY
 
Deloris Elverna Herfindahl, age 90, of Belgrade, Minnesota, formerly of Benson, died Sunday, February 26, 2017, at Glacial Ridge Health System Hospital.  Visitation will be from 3 – 5 p.m., Sunday, March 5, 2017, at Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.  Visitation will continue from 10– 11 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11 a.m., Monday,   March 6, 2017, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Interment will be in Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Benson, MN.  Arrangements are with Zniewski Funeral Home.
 
Deloris Elverna Herfindahl was born August 16, 1926, to Gilman and Elsie Devitt (Dahl) Rust in Glenwood,   Minnesota.  She was baptized September 24, 1926, by Rev. A.H. Belgum and confirmed September 7, 1941, by Rev. E.O. Barsness at the Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church.
 
Deloris grew up in Chippewa Falls Township near the community of Terrace, Minnesota.  She graduated from Pope County District #69 and Glenwood High School in 1945.  On June 2, 1946, Deloris was united in marriage to Reuben Garfield Herfindahl at the Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church by Rev. Leonard Thompson.    This union was blessed with more than 52 years of marriage, 3 children, 5 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.  They lived and farmed in Benson Township from 1946 until she moved to Scofield Place in 2009.  During this time, Deloris was a dedicated mother, farm-wife, creative homemaker and avid gardener.
 
As their children became older, she had the opportunity to fulfill her lifelong dream to go to college attending the University of Minnesota in Morris and graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English.  Later she attended St Cloud State and studied for her Master’s Degree in Library Science.  Deloris taught at Barrett High School in 1965-66, Boyd High School from 1966 thru 1971, and Bellingham High School from 1971 thru 1992.  She was an avid reader and was always up for travel and adventure.  In her retirement Deloris especially loved traveling with and visiting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She was a member of the Sons of Norway, Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church, and Farmers Union.
 
Deloris was called from this life on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at Glacial Ridge Health System Hospital in Glenwood, Minnesota.  She attained 90 years, 6 months, and 10 days of age.
 
She is survived by her children: Garfield (Stacy) Herfindahl of Glenwood, Marshall (Beverly) Herfindahl of Boyd, and Grant (Hege) Herfindahl of Benson; grandchildren: Eston Herfindahl, Arie Herfindahl, Reuben (Caroline) Herfindahl, Ingvild (Patrick Quint) Herfindahl, and Erland (Esther) Herfindahl; great-grandchildren: Morgan Herfindahl, Grant R. Herfindahl, Halvard Herfindahl, Annelise Herfindahl, Anders Herfindahl - Quint, Johanna Herfindahl - Quint, Torsten Herfindahl - Quint, Nils Herfindahl, and Ove Herfindahl.
 
Deloris was preceded in death by her parents, Gilman and Elsie Devitt Rust; brother, DeWayne Rust; and her husband, Reuben G. Herfindahl on April 22, 1999.  Blessed be her memory.

Benson, Minnesota – Gladys “Mickie” J. Jensen, died on Tuesday morning, February 21, 2017, at the Gabriel House in Murdock, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, February 27, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 26, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be in the Benson City Cemetery. Zniewski Funeral Home of Benson is assisting the family with arrangements.
   
Gladys Jean Jensen, “Mickie”, was born on July 13, 1933, in Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of Gustov and Hannah Ecklund Coulson.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. She grew up south of Benson, in Swenoda Township, and in Benson and attended Benson Public Schools. On September 1, 1950, she was united in marriage to H. Donald Jensen at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Benson. To this union, three daughters and one son were born. Together they were able to share in over 49 years of marriage.  They lived on the farm in rural DeGraff, Kildare Township, until 11 years ago when Mickie moved to Benson. Mickie worked on the farm with Donald and also at Simmonds Produce, Howard Ogle Produce and Fingerhut.  She also worked as a craft worker for Minnesota Country.  Mickie lived the last 4 months at Gabriel House in Murdock.  She loved living there.  She especially loved the wonderful staff.
    
Mickie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was involved with quilting and the Ladies WELCA. She enjoyed crocheting, painting, needlepoint, bird watching, crafts, reading, and crosswords.  She loved spending time with her kids and grandkids.  She also liked to Facetime with the kids and grandkids.  She was so proud that she was able to Facetime without any help!
 
She is survived by her children: JoAnn (Doug) Sorenson of Warren, Jean (Allen) Lesteberg of DeGraff, Janet (Terry) Schlueter of Silver Lake, and Jim (Tanja) Jensen of DeGraff; twelve grandchildren: Amanda Wiener, Jake Sorenson, Lisa Pederson, Chris Bartz, Shane Lesteberg, Rick Bartz, Elizabeth Lesteberg, Jonathan Jensen, Anna Jensen, Ryan Jensen, Nick Schlueter, and Robyn Schlueter; 24 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
 
Mickie was preceded in death by her husband, Donald on May 30, 2000; her parents, Hannah and Gustov Coulson; siblings, Raymond Coulson and Jenny Chedle; and many cousins. Blessed be her memory.

NOTICE and OBITUARY
 
Delmer Stanley Radtke, age 85, of Danvers, Minn., died Tuesday, February 28, 2017, at Swift County Benson Health Services.  Visitation will be from 10 – 11 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson.  Interment will be in the Benson City Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Zniewski Funeral Home.
 
Delmer Stanley Radtke was born on February 27, 1932, in Moyer Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the son of Arthur and Josie (Beyer) Radtke.  He was baptized March 20, 1932, by Rev. Paul Gierke at Charlie Radtke’s Home in Shible Township and confirmed May 13, 1945, by Rev. Herman Faedtke at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Danvers.  He grew up in the Danvers, Minnesota area and attended school through the 8th grade.  Over the years, he worked at Tyler Corporation, owned Radtke Mink Ranch, and Radtke Refrigeration.
 
Delmer served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from September 9, 1951 to August 18, 1954 as a Sergeant First Class.  He received the Korean Service Ribbon, Bronze Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Medal, and Combat Infantry Badge.
 
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson.  Delmer was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed trapping, hunting, and fishing.  He also enjoyed spending time with family, cooking, playing cards, telling jokes, and his dog, Bud Burton, a faithful companion.
 
Delmer was called from this life on Tuesday evening, February 28, 2017, surrounded by the love of his family, at the Swift County Benson Health Services.  He attained 85 years and one day of age.
 
Delmer is survived by his sister, Margery (Leo) Pierson of Rochester; sister-in-law, Donna Radtke of Morris; nieces and nephews: Wayne (Jean) Mallan, Michael (Nancy) Mallan, Patricia (Dave) Smith, Steven (Laura) Radtke, Brian (Samantha) Radtke, Chad (Kimberly) Radtke, Tammy (Joby) Radtke-Looker, Teresa (Bob) Minkema, and Mona (Brad) Norman.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Josie; sister and brother-in-law, Vera and Lyle Mallan; and brother, Dennis Radtke.  Blessed be his memory.

Theodore Jennings Torgelson

Theodore Jennings Torgelson, age 87, of Alexandria, MN, formerly of rural Appleton, died Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at his home surrounded by family.  Visitation will be from 5–7 p.m. Friday, March 17, 2017, at Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.  Visitation will continue from 10–11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 18, 2017, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria.  Interment will be in the Big Bend Lutheran Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Zniewski Funeral Home.
 
T. Jennings Torgelson was born July 27, 1929, in Westbank Township, Swift County, Minnesota.  He was the son of Arne Theodore and Mamie (Ostby) Torgelson, the youngest of five children.  He was baptized and confirmed at Big Bend Lutheran Church by Pastor C.T. Jenson.  Jennings attended Dist. #75 country school, and graduated from Appleton High School in 1947.  On January 27, 1962, Jennings was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Lindstrom at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  This union was blessed with more than 55 years of marriage, 3 children, and 8 grandchildren.
 
Jennings farmed the Torgelson Family Farm for 44 years until his retirement in 1991.  Although retired, farming was in his blood.  Fixing, checking the fields and spending hours in the combine were standard for him to the end. He was an active member of Big Bend Lutheran Church serving on the church council, pastoral call committee, and as a Sunday School Superintendent and teacher.  Jennings was a Swift County Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor and a member of the Barnes-Aastad Soil Research Center in Morris. He was an active member of the Benson Male Chorus and Swift County Rural Youth.
 
In 1997 Jennings and Margaret moved to Lake Geneva in Alexandria, fulfilling their lifelong dream of living at the lake.  Jennings was always ready for a “road trip” in their van or RV.  There were no “fly over” states in his mind.  He settled for plane tickets for their travel to Scandinavia, Germany, and Costa Rica.  In Alexandria, Jennings was a member of the Golden Kiwanis and Calvary Lutheran Church.  In September, they moved to Grand Arbor Independent Living Center in Alexandria.
 
He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Alexandria; children: T. Jay (Alana) Torgelson of Corona del Mar, CA, Ann (Greg) Stehn of Spicer, and Amy (Cory) Forsberg of Penngrove, CA; grandchildren: T. Jennings Torgelson, Samantha Torgelson, Jayna Torgelson, Kayla Torgelson, Hannah (Elliot) Eckhoff, Shelby Stehn, Aubrey Forsberg, and Olin Forsberg; and brothers-in-law, Harold Shellum and Harry Hartnell.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Mamie Torgelson; and siblings: Evelyn (Clarence) Thompson, Myrtle (Ernie) Gilsrud, Ruth Shellum, and Judith Hartnell.  Blessed be his memory.

Clarence "Butch" F. Higdon

Clarence "Butch" F. Higdon, 68, of Jackson passed away at his residence on Tuesday, March 14, 2017. A gathering of family and friends will be on Friday, March 17, 2017  from 5 to 7 PM at the Osterberg Funeral Home in Jackson.

Funeral Service will be on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 1:30 PM at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Benson with Rev. John R. Smith officiating. Military Rites will follow by the Benson American Legion and VFW Posts.

Burial will be at a later date in the Benson City Cemetery.

Randy Twitchell

Randy Twitchell, age 72, of Appleton, passed away Saturday, March 4th in his home.  Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 10, at Zion Lutheran Church in Appleton, officiated by Rev. Linda Lagergren.  Interment followed at Appleton City Cemetery.

Randy Leon Twitchell was born October 21, 1944, in Appleton, Minnesota, the son of Wayne and Gladys (Blom) Twitchell.  He was baptized April 8, 1945 by Rev. Roger Schmuck and was confirmed on April 17, 1957 by Rev. Paul Hallett, both at Gethsemane Episcopal Church in Appleton.  Randy was raised in Appleton, graduating from Appleton High School in 1962.  After graduation, Randy attended Mayville State Teachers College where he earned his teaching degree.  On October 24, 1981 Randy was united in marriage to Julie Anne Stroebel by Rev. Lyle Rich at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  This union was blessed with over 35 years together.   

Over the years Randy worked a variety of jobs.  In their younger years, Randy and his brother, Rodney, would mow lawns together.  As he got older, Randy set pins at Del’s Dew Well Lanes, delivered papers, and would help his mother, Gladys, at her bakery and her restaurants.  In his adult years Randy worked for the Rail Road, was a bartender at the Holloway Liquor Store, worked as an Elementary School and Substitute teacher, a child support officer for Swift County Human Services, operated a painting business with his wife, Julie, worked at Peg’s Place and later in his career he worked as an Educator and Correctional Officer at Prairie Correction Facility for 18 years.

Randy was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Appleton, the Appleton Lions, and was President of the Appleton Senior Center and Preserve Appleton Heritage, Inc.  Randy played a leading role in the successful effort to continue operation of the Appleton Senior Center and to preserve the Gethsemane Episcopal Church in Appleton.   He enjoyed playing cards, bowling, and shooting pool. 

He is survived by his wife, Julie of Appleton; brother, Rodney (Marilyn) Twitchell of Howard Lake; sister-in-law, Noreen (Owen) Schuerman of Appleton; brothers-in-law: Dale Arneson of Granite Falls and Terryl (Judith) Stroebel of Holloway; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Gladys (Blom) Twitchell; sister, Kay Arneson; parents-in-law, Julius and Esther Stroebel; brothers-in-law, Merle Stroebel and Maurice Stroebel; two sisters-in-law who died in infancy.  Blessed be the memory of Randy Leon Twitchell.  Please sign the guestbook at www.zniewskifuneralhome.com

John Thomas Hutchinson III

John Thomas Hutchinson

John Thomas Hutchinson, III of Benson, MN passed away on March 26th, 2017 at the age of 89 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.  A Celebration of his Life will be at a later date.

John T. Hutchinson was born May 15th, 1927 to John T. and Virginia Hutchinson in Lakewood, Ohio.  He was baptized, confirmed and graduated High School in Lakewood, OH.  He served in the U.S. Airforce from 1946 through 1948 and was stationed in Brazil.   Returning to Ohio, he worked as a Park Manager at Crane Creek State Park on the shores of Lake Erie.  He and his family moved to Minnesota in the late 1960’s.   He worked for the U.S Job Corps in Detroit Lakes and later moved to Benson, MN where he worked and retired from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  John’s passion was nature and teaching other’s about conservation and the care of nature, especially to his Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren and countless other youth.  He was a gunsmith and an avid hunter and fisherman who loved to teach his craft to anyone who would listen.  His focus in gunsmithing was the building and restoration of muzzleloaders.  He was a Hunter Safety Instructor for over 40 years and if you were a youth in Benson who took the course, you were lucky enough to spend your field-day at his beloved “Hutch’s Outpost” where he resided for over 48 years.  He was involved in nature presentations for Boy Scouts of America and also enjoyed gathering with his closest friends, setting up his tipi and participating in Rendezvous/Mountain Man Re-enactments.  He felt his greatest gifts in life were his Family, his Friendships and Nature.  He was fortunate enough to be able to enjoy over 30 years of retirement doing all the things he loved.

John is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sandra (Nelson) and Children: John Thomas (Marci Krattenmaker), Maria Virginia (Thomas Soosai), Matthew Webb (Melinda Trainor), Lance Austin (Heidi VanWeeleden), and Joy Virginia (Craig Kesteloot).  Grandchildren: Jennifer, Jill, Ian, Melia, Brandon, Taylor, Nicole, Jacob and Isaac.  Great Grandchildren: Logan, Elliot, Reese and Wyatt.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Ruth DeSantis Castellana, brother Robert (and Mayna) Hutchinson and his favorite Aunt Harriet “Hank” Calavan.

May he rest in peace.

Victoria Ann Thole, age 68, of Benson, Minn., died Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at St. Cloud Hospital.  Visitation will be from 6 – 8 p.m., Monday, April 3, 2017, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson.  Visitation will continue from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in DeGraff.  Interment will be in the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Zniewski Funeral Home.
