Claude B. Cassidy, 90, of Benson, Minnesota, passed away peacefully August 30, 2016.

Family services will be held at the Fort Snelling Cemetery, Friday, September 9 at 12:15 p.m., Lane #2.

Claude is survived by children, Janet Bennett and Steven (Roxann); grandson, Raymond; many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores.

Harrison “QBall” D. Price

Harrison “QBall” D. Price, 78, passed away on September 4, 2016.  He was born in Vernon, TX.  He proudly served and retired as a Chief from the US Navy after 20 years of service and also retired from Civil Service after 20 years of service in the Utilities Department.  He loved to hunt, play golf and go camping with his family.  "Every day is a holiday."

 QBall is preceded in death by his wife, Ann; son, Lowell; parents, Wayne and Willie Maude "Bill" Price; and his sister, Doretta.  He is survived by his children, Rose Verones (Carmen), Susan Gray, Judy Staton (Scott), Thomas Price (Tonja) and Joel Price (Beth); his grandchildren, Cathy, Cassie, Brian, Kimberly, Kristen, Sean, Bud, Samantha, Caitlin, Jessica, and Abigail; and great-grandchildren, Hunter, Dylan,  Gwen, Juanita, Molly, Connor, Zoey, Colton, Kara, Raegan and Jason.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 pm (as per Dad’s prearranged instructions) on Thursday at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norview Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 9, 2016 at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Funeral services for Joseph Mary Abrego will be held at 10:30 on Monday, September 19, 2016 at the St. Theodore Catholic Church.  Father Russell Scepaniak will officiate.  Visitation will take place from 3 – 5 PM on Sunday at Bonnerup Funeral Chapel, Albert Lea, and again one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.  Interment will take place at St. Theodore Catholic Cemetery.

Joseph passed away on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at Thorne Crest Senior Living Community.  He was 66 years old.

Joseph “Joe” Mary Abrego was born on November 10, 1949 in Hayward, MN to Manual and Mathilda (Garcia) Abrego.  He was a lifetime member of the Albert Lea area.  On November 18, 1967, Joe was united in marriage to Joyce (Slinde) in Bricelyn.  To this union, three children were born.  Joe and his family were members of St. Theodore Catholic Church.

Joe worked at Universal Cooperative and then later Streaters where he worked at a press.  He retired from Streaters in 2014.  He was a member of the Steel Workers Union and the Carpenters Union; always being a “union man.”  Aside from work, Joe enjoyed fishing, going to garage sales, and cheering on his Minnesota Vikings and Twins.   His family was most important to him, especially his grandchildren, whom his life centered around.  He will be remembered as a hardworking man with a big heart that enjoyed keeping life fun by playing jokes on everyone.  He will be deeply missed.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Manual and Mathilda; mother and father in-law Orlyn and Irene Slinde, son in-law, John Brabec; siblings, Manual “Lupe” Abrego, Sarah Berara, and a brother in infancy, Martin.

Those left to carry on his legacy include his wife of 48 years, Joyce; children, Joe (Kim) Abrego of Albert Lea, Jeremy (Shellie) Abrego of Benson, MN, and Jackie Brabec (special friend, Dave Farness) of Albert Lea; grandchildren, Allison, Trevor, Logan, Trenton, Rya, Jarrett, Jena (fiancé, Adam Stenzel), Jasmine (special friend, Chris Seul); great-grandchildren, Evalys and Aliyeh; siblings, Phyllis (Joe) Talamantes of Albert Lea, Kathy (Frank) Diaz of Wells, MN, Margaret Abrego of Irvine, TX, Angel Abrego of Mcallen, TX, Mariane (Lyle) Smith of Springfield, MO, Tina Ruiz of Mankato, MN, and his twin sister Josephine (David) Olivo of Blue Earth, MN; brother in-law Jon Slinde of Fairmont, MN, sister in-laws Ardus Nimz of Albert Lea, Cleone (Jim) Ashley of St. Cloud, MN, Candice (Ed) Courtney of Portage, MI, Kate (Jack) Willis of Ely, MN, Ivy (Chuck) Jerich of Winton, MN, and Barb Prudoehl of Edina, MN.

Elaine Genevieve Schwendemann, age 87, of Benson, died Friday in Golden Living Center –Meadow Lane in Benson.  Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 20th at 11:00AM, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson, officiated by Rev. Dennis McManus.  Visitation will be Monday from 4:30PM to 7:00PM at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Visitation will resume for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.  Burial will follow in the Benson City Cemetery.
 
Elaine Genevieve Schwendemann was born November 21, 1928 at her Grandparents homestead near Glenwood Minnesota to Melvin and Leona (Foner) Cummins.  She grew up in the Glenwood area graduating from Villard High School in 1947.  She worked as a sales clerk in Benson at Ben Franklin and then Clark’s Drug until she was 80 years.
 
She met Herman Schwendemann while roller skating.  They were married August 20, 1950 at Glenwood Lutheran Church.  Five children were born to this union. Elaine considered her greatest treasure her family.  She loved spending time with her kids and grandkids and always enjoyed family events and reunions. She was frequently spotted with a camera around her neck and enjoyed her pictures immensely.
 
She was a wonderful cook and baker and shared her talents with everyone she knew.  Her potato salad was legendary!  She loved her vegetable garden spending countless hours canning and freezing the surplus.  Her flower gardens added color to her world.
 
Elaine passed away Friday, September 16, 2016 in Golden Living Center –Meadow Lane in Benson.  She attained 87 years, 9 months, and 25 days of age.  She is survived by her children: Linda (Jim) Budolfson of Meridian, ID, Jim (Rhonda) Schwendemann of Benson, Larry (Darla) Schwendemann of Starbuck, Nancy (Lonnie) Myrom of Worthington and Jason (Tami) Schwendemann of Benson; ten grandchildren: Heather (Jeremy) Jensen, David (Anna) Budolfson, Judd Schwendemann, Cayla Schwendemann, Grant Schwendemann, Emily Schwendemann, Alexander (Katie Kroshus) Myrom, Kinzie (Adam) Lund, Irelyn Schwendemann and Hudsyn Schwendemann; five great-grandchildren: Bryce, Alyssa and Braden Jensen and Owen and Amelia Budolfson; siblings: Gloria Town of Park Rapids, Violet Razink of Alexandra, Margie Hoff of Menahga, Bonnie Federation of Hudson, WI and John Cummins of Nevis; and many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.  Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Herman in 1987; parents, Melvin and Leona Cummins; brother, Virgil Cummins and sister, Dorothy Vollan.

Helen Carlson, 96, passed away September 12, 2016 with her loving husband, Carl, at her side, in Montrose, CO.

There will be a Memorial Service for Helen, October 4, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel, with burial at the Veterans Cemetery in Grand Junction, CO.

Helen was born April 22, 1920 to Martin and Genora Larson.  Helen spent her childhood in the Milan area and graduated from Milan High School before continuing her education at Lyn Business School.

Helen married the love of her life, Carl Carlson,  December 6, 1947 in Big Bend, Minnesota.

Helen was a member of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson, Minnesota. Helen particularly loved crossword puzzles, reading and long walks, but more than those things she loved her grandchildren, great grandchildren, family and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her son, Jonathan Carlson and is survived by her husband Carl Carlson, her sons Jerrold Carlson, James Carlson, her daughter Judy Evans, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Jozy Lyn Saterbak was born January 27, 1993 in Edina, Minnesota to parents Wade and Juanita (McGee) Saterbak.  Jozy was a very compassionate and strong young woman.  She was kind, smart, beautiful and full of energy.  She loved to dress her best and make sure her cousins looked their best as well.  She loved to go shopping and to get her hair done.  Jozy loved her brother Chantz very much.  They loved to antagonize each other but at the end of the day they were best of friends.  She was very active in school activities; playing volleyball and basketball, dance and piano.  Jozy had a great love for music and reading.  She had a comical personality and a great belly laugh…she had a smile that could fill your heart.  Above all, Jozy loved to spend time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her mother, Juanita Saterbak of Danvers; father, Wade Saterbak of Benson; brother, Chantz Saterbak of Canby; grandmother, Elaine Saterbak of Benson; many aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.    Jozy was preceded in death by her grandparents: John Saterbak, Thomas and Fern McGee; aunts: Sharon Nyren, Becky Mohrman, Judy McGee; cousin, Robin Nyren.

Hjordis (Jo) Dahlberg, 89, died Tuesday, September 27, 2016  at home in Dellwood, Minnesota.

A funeral service was held Monday, October 3  at 11:30 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Luthern Church, 900 Stillwater Rd., Mahtomedi. Visitation was one hour prior at the church.

Hjordis (Jo) Dahlberg was born in Swift County, Minnesota and was raised in Danvers. She graduated from Benson High School in 1944 and subsequently attended Minneapolis Business College. In Minneapolis, Jo met and married her husband Robert (Bob) Dahlberg. They raised four children in the Falcon Heights area until 1963 when they moved to Dellwood. Bob passed away in 1981, and Jo continued to live in Dellwood until she died.

Jo lived an extraordinary life. She was a successful real estate agent, travel agent, and Merle Norman Business owner. She traveled extensively throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and North America. She was a great cook and loved to host parties for family and friends. Gardening and bridge were two of her favorite pastimes. Jo was a member at St. Andrews Lutheran Church for over 50 years. Twenty years ago, at age 70, she was a volunteer for the Olympics in Atlanta.  

Jo is survived by her loving companion of 16 years, Floyd Svean; children: Greg (Kathy) Dahlberg of Alexandria, VA, Steve (Cathy) Dahlberg of Bellevue, WA, Janet (Dennis) Thiets of Atlanta, GA, Carol Motske of Cedar Rapids, IA; eight grandchildren and one granddaughter-in-law and their families, including six great grandchildren and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Also surviving are two sisters, Blanche Gravlun of Alexandria and Lorna (Bill) Godfrey of White Bear Lake.

Jo is preceded in death by her parents, Lars and Mable nee Larson, Underthun; husband, Robert Dahlberg; brothers: Astor Underthun, Blanchard Underthun; sister Grace Antolick; son-in-law, Mike Motske; and grandchildren, Julia Dahlberg and Erik Dahlberg.

She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

Lewis “Ted” Jacobson

Lewis ‘Ted’ Jacobson

Lewis Theodore “Ted” Jacobson, 72, of Sartell, Minnesota, passed away  Friday, September 30, 2016 peacefully in his sleep, at the VA Hospice Unit in St. Cloud.

A funeral service was held at 12:30 p.m.  Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Sartell. Visitation was held at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Sauk Rapids, from 6-8 p.m.  Wednesday, Oct. 5. Burial took place Friday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m. at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls.

Ted was born in Benson, Minnesota  March 14, 1944 to Clarence & Viola (Soltau) Jacobson. He graduated from Benson High School in 1962.

October 3, 1962, he enlisted in the US Air Force, and left for Lackland AFB, Texas for eight weeks of basic training. That training was abbreviated to five weeks, then sent on to Lowry AFB, in Colorado to attend Technical Support School. In September 1963, he moved to Nellis AFB, in Las Vegas, Nevada and resided there until April 1965. After that, he was at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan and sent to Korat Royal Thai AFB in Thailand with the Tactical Fighter Wing from July 1966 to July 1967. Ted was transferred to McConnell AFB, Wichita, Kansas. He lived there from July 1967 to February 1971. He was married to Tomoko Unten from September 7, 1967 to October 1977. From that union came two children, Lisa Marie born June 1968, and Ryan Eric born March 1970.

February 1971 to April 1972 came a move to Davis-Monson AFB, Tucson, Arizona. From April 1972 until June 1973 he was stationed at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, Nevada. June 1973 to March 1978 Ted was an Instructor at Lowry AFB, Denver, Colorado. Next was a move to Seymour Johnson AFB, Goldsboro, North Carolina from March 1978 to June 1980.

Ted resided overseas again from June 1980 until August 1983 at Bitburg Air Base, in Germany. While stationed there he met Gitta Malberg. 33 years ago  December 17, 1982 they were married. For the remainder of his Air Force career he was stationed at Ellsworth AFB, in South Dakota. He retired May 31st, 1985. Starting in March of 1986 he began his employment with the United States Postal Service in Rapid City, SD, transferring to Waite Park, Minnesota in 1994 and retiring after 20 years.

Ted loved cars, motorcycles, and Nascar races. Any new electronic gadget caught his eye and more than likely would soon be within his grasp. Ted’s biggest love was his family and friends. He loved spending time with them and sharing stories and memories over a good meal. He was especially proud of his grandchildren and always had a kind smile and supportive and encouraging words of wisdom.

He is survived by his wife Gitta Jacobson; children: Lisa (Mike) Boland, Pierre, SD and Ryan Jacobson (Roxane Cutler), Las Vegas, NV; stepson, Alexander Brost, Germany; grandchildren, Priscilla and Augustine Boland, Tyler and Stephanie Jacobson; one brother, Alan Jacobson, Benson; four sisters, Gwen Sinclair, Omaha, NE, Claudia Veiman, Omaha, NE, Helen Norstedt, Benson, Becky Newstrom, Brainerd; sister-in-Law, Terry Long, Phoenix AZ. Ted was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials have been established to benefit the St. Cloud VA.

   Eunice Ann Quick, 96, of Benson, MN formerly of Nevis, MN was called to her eternal resting place on October 4, 2016 at the Gabriel House Assisted Living Home in Murdock, MN.

   Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 10:30 AM at the Nevis Church of Christ in Nevis, MN.  Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 5 until 7 PM at the Cease Family Funeral Home Chapel in Nevis, MN.  Visitation will also be held for 1 hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.  Co-Officiants will be Pastor Paul Bowles and Pastor Barry Klein.  Interment will be held at the Lakeview Cemetery in Nevis, MN.  Friends may leave online condolences at ceasefuneralhome.com.   Arrangements are being handled by the Cease Family Funeral Home of Nevis, MN.

   Eunice Ann Blade was born on February 7, 1920 in Mpls, MN the daughter of Henry and Katherine Mae (Barret) Blade.  She grew up and attended school in Bloomington, MN.  As a teenager she moved with her family to Hackensack, MN, where she worked in the area.  She met a gentleman by the name of Clifford J. Quick at a local dance.  They were united in marriage on February 6, 1938 in Hackensack, MN.  They later moved to Seattle where they both assisted with the war effort by working in the Boeing Aircraft manufacturing facility.  Clifford later enlisted into the US Army and Eunice resided in Akeley, MN. They owned and operated a restaurant in Nevis, MN.  Eunice eventually began working as an aide for the Nevis ECFE in the Nevis Schools.  She retired in 1998.   

   She was a longtime active member of the Nevis Church of Christ.  She was also active in the local Nevis Study Club.  She loved reading, playing cards, carving, decorative painting and sewing baby blankets for her grandchildren and Easter dresses for her granddaughters. Clifford passed away in 1995 and in 1998 Eunice moved from Nevis to Benson, MN to be near her daughter.   She enjoyed her grandchildren and making new friendships while attending the Baptist church in Benson.  She loved staying busy and being involved with a local quilting group.

   She is survived by her daughter – Jodee (Charles) Erickson of Benson, MN; Grandchildren – Jeff Case, Susan (Rod) Kiehl, Christopher Hemmah, Christina (Thomas) Ahrndt, Robert (Crystal) Erickson; great grandchildren – Tracey Kiehl, Shawn Kiehl, Andrew (Christine) Hemmah, Kali (Ryan) Unke, Kelsi (Thomas) Lye, Jordon Ahrndt, Cody Erickson, Ella Erickson and her great great grandchildren - Vanessa, Benjamin, Alyssa, Leif and Bennett.

   She was preceded in death by her parents, husband – Clifford Quick, sister – Irma Beaumont, daughter – Karen Hemmah, grandson – Michael Hemmah and great grandson – Lucas Halverson.

Sylvester “Ollie” Moist, 87, of Willmar, Minnesota (formerly of Benson) died Friday, October 7, 2016  in the St Cloud Veterans Hospital Community Living Center.  

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, October 12, 2016 (today) at 11 a.m., at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson with Father Jeremy Kucera officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church, with the Rosary starting at 10 a.m.

Sylvester “Ollie” Moist was born August 24, 1929 in Benson, Minnesota to Oliver and Ethel Moist.  From an early age, Ollie lived with the Robert Dolan family in Danvers.  He graduated from Benson High School in 1947. Ollie played football in high school and played baseball on the Danvers town league team.  He entered US Air Force in 1951. While in the Air Force, Ollie studied dental assistance at the USN Technical School in Great Lakes, Illinois.  Leaving the Air Force in 1955, he worked at grain elevators in Danvers and Benson for many years. Ollie also worked for Tyler Mfg., the Chippewa Valley Ethanol Plant, and the Heartland Girls Ranch.

Ollie married Louise Tuttle in 1976. They were married until her passing in 1992.

His interests included woodworking, gardening, fixing small engines, participating in Habitat for Humanity projects, and he was an avid baseball fan. In recent years, he enjoyed spending time in Arizona. He was especially proud of his “apple tree”, given to him by his step-grandson, that turned out to be a prime producing pear tree.  Ollie was a member of the Knights of Columbus since age 15.  He was also a member of the VFW.

He is survived by his step-children: Larry (Lucretia) Buroker of Coon Rapids, Lou Ella (Dwight) Brown of Benson, Lola (Gary) Lane of Apache Junction, Arizona, Jim VanderWeyst of Appleton, and Tony VanderWeyst of Benson; and numerous step-grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings: Cleo (Myrna) Moist, David Moist, and Darlene (Don) Flower; three half-sisters: Judy Skoglund, Linda (Kenneth) Wrobleski, and Elaine Jobgen; sister-in-law, Jane Moist; many nieces and nephews; and his life time friends, John and Elaine Carruth of Danvers.  

Ollie was preceded in death by his wife, Louise; parents, Oliver and Ethel Moist; and siblings: Elaine (Moist) Cameron, Roy, Bessie, and Benjamin Moist.  

Blessed be the memory of Ollie Moist.

Elizabeth “Betty” L. Lageson, 86, of Benson died  Sunday evening, October 9, 2016, at the Bethesda Care Center in Willmar, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held  Saturday, October 15, at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson. Visitation will be held Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Interment will be at the West Bank Cemetery of rural Danvers.

Palmer R. Pederson, 93, of Benson, Minnesota, died Friday, September 23, 2016 in the Swift County Benson Hospital.  Interment will be held at a later date in the Swift Falls Cemetery.

Palmer R. Pederson was born October 27, 1922 in Swift Falls, Minnesota to Peter Johan and Dena Marie (Amundson) Pederson.  He grew up and attended school in Pope County.  

September 24, 1947, Palmer was united in marriage to Eleanor C. Anderson by Pastor Rohne at St. Pauli Church.  This union was blessed with just one day short of 69 years of marriage.  They lived in Swift Falls, Pope County and he worked in farming and at Anderson Ready Mix Plant.  His interests included fishing, hunting, and woodworking.

Palmer is survived by his wife, Eleanor (Anderson) Pederson; children: David (Debbie) Pederson of Foristell, MO, Patricia Schultz of Edgemont, SD, Cheryl (Ron) Morris of Tacoma, WA, and Paul Pederson of Tacoma, WA; 10 grandchildren; three  great-grandchildren; and a sister Delaine Lene of Benson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Dena Pederson; siblings: Raymond, Phillip, and Richard Pederson; and grandson, Adam Pederson.

Rose Mary Nokleby, 91, of Montevideo, Minnesota passed away peacefully October 5, 2016 in Hastings.

A Memorial Mass will be held 11 a.m. Saturday October 29, 2016 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 512 Black Oak Ave., Montevideo,  with a gathering of family and friends one hour  prior to Mass at church.

A private interment will take place at the Hillside Cemetery in Havelock Township. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be donated to the Red Wing Mayo Hospice, and the Regina Senior Living.

Rose Mary grew up on a farm in Swift County, went to country school, then high school in Benson. She married Vernal Nokleby and they farmed in Mandt Township. They semi-retired in 1976 and began many years of travel in Europe and the U.S., including camping and living in their trailer at the lake.

Rose Mary loved dancing and fishing. She did word puzzles, worked in the field and raised huge gardens. She wrote poetry for fun, plus countless programs for showers, anniversaries, 4-H programs, and thank you odes to the people with whom she and Vernal travelled.

Rose Mary is preceded in death by her loving husband of nearly 68 years, Vernal; parents, Warren and Margaret Payne; siblings, Thelma Pahl, Lillian Flolo and her husband Manuel, Albert “Bud” Payne and his wife, Betty, and brother-in-law, Henry Walsh.

She is survived by her children, Dennis Nokleby (Nicole Delhaye), Lois Nokleby, and Delos (Fran Walsh) Nokleby; grandchildren, Liv (Craig Emery) Kittelson, Erik Kittelson, and Kjersti Kittelson (Steve Guetter); great grandchildren, Marilla Emery, and Ann and Megan Guetter; sister, Albie Walsh; brother-in-law, Jesse Pahl, and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m.  Friday, October 21, at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson. Visitation will be held  Thursday, October 20, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the St Francis Catholic Church in Benson, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Interment will be in the St. Bridget Catholic Cemetery in DeGraff, Minnesota.
