Kathleen Newell, 82, of Benson

Kathleen Newell, 82, of Benson, Minnesota, passed away  Monday, October 13, 2014, at the St. Cloud Hospital.  
Funeral services were held  Saturday, October 18, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in DeGraff. Visitation was  held at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson  Friday, October 17, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with a Parish Rosary at 5:00 p.m.  
Interment was in the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church Cemetery in DeGraff.  
Kathleen Newell was born  March 21, 1932, in Cashel Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of Frank and Loretta Bryne Newell.  
She was baptized and confirmed at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in DeGraff, and grew up on the farm in Cashel Township and in DeGraff.  She attended District #28 country school in Cashel Township and DeGraff public schools.  
She lived in DeGraff until 1963 when she moved to Benson.  She enjoyed visiting with friends and rides in the car.  Kathleen loved doing things such as baking and housework with her mother, and after Loretta’s death she became Marge’s constant companion.
Kathleen is survived by her sisters Mary Ann Knutson and Marge Newell, as well as many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Loretta, a brother Jim, a brother-in-law Eldon Knutson, a sister-in-law Jean Newell, and a niece Jeanie.  Blessed be her memory.

Alice L. Pierce, of Benson died Thursday, October 23,  2014, at the St. Cloud Hospital.  Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston on Wednesday.  Visitation will be held on Monday, October 27, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church and also for one hour prior to the service at the church.  Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Paul Grothe, age 83, Benson

Paul Grothe, age 83, died Friday, October 24, 2014 at the Golden Living Center – Meadow Lane in Benson, Minnesota.
     
Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M., Thursday, October 30, 2014, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson with Rev. Art Wiese officiating.  Burial will be in the Benson City Cemetery.  
     
Visitation will be from 5:30 – 7:30 P.M., Wednesday, October 29, 2014, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson.  Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.  Arrangements are with the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson, MN.

Paul Henry August Grothe was born February 10, 1931 at home at Six Mile Grove Township, the son of Ewald and Rosa (Herman) Grothe.  He was baptized as an infant and was confirmed on November 28, 1943 by Rev. H.A. Faedtke, both at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Danvers.  Paul was raised on the family farm south of Danvers.  He attended Six Mile Grove Country School and then attended Danvers Public School through the eighth grade and attended ninth grade at the Benson High School.  As a youth Paul was in 4-H and enjoyed showing sheep at the Swift County Fair.
 
On June 30, 1954 Paul was united in marriage to Shirley Currey.  This union was blessed with five daughters: Becky, Faye, Eileen, Tammy, and Nita.  Paul and Shirley raised their family on the Grothe farm near Danvers.  He enjoyed attending the auctions and working at the Benson Livestock and continued to do so until his health no longer permitted.  Paul was the Treasurer for Six Mile Grove Township for 25 years.  He also served on the Church Board at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Danvers.  Paul was an usher and custodian at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson.  He loved to make things, especially while woodworking.  Collecting toy farm tractors was also important to Paul, primarily Massey Ferguson.
 
Paul died on October 24, 2014.  He had attained 83 years, 8 months, and 14 days of age.  He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Benson; daughters: Becky (Norman) Hoffman of Holloway, Faye (Greg) Gunderson of Benson, Tammy (Jeff) Weber of Watertown, SD, Nita (Niels) Unke of Benson; son-in-law, Stanley Glimsdal Jr. of Murdock; 13 grandchildren: Jennifer Hoffman, Rachel (Ryan) Luft, Adam and Wade Gunderson, Amanda (Adam) Douglas, Aubrey (Eric) Olson, Andrew (Alicia) Glimsdal, John (Kaitlin) Glimsdal, Nathan (Michele) Weber, Krystal Weber, Justin (Maggie) Grothe, Ryan and Kayla Unke; two step-grandchildren: Joan (Dave) Gatemeyer, Robert (Mary) Hoffman; 18 great-grandchildren: Jack, Madelynn, Mamie, Henry, Eleanor, Lily, Heylen, April, Devon, Jayda, Jenna, Rihanna, Jaelynn, Devon, Addison, Makenna, Caleb, Issabella; 3 step-great-grandchildren: Carl, Quinn, Olivia; sisters: Margaret Reich of Benson, Hilda (Orville) Swenson of Appleton, Beatrice Beyer of Benson; “special brother” August Grothe of Benson; cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
 
Paul is preceded in death by his parents, Ewald and Rosa; daughter, Eileen Glimsdal; Brother, Ewald Jr.; sister, Rosa Koenen; parents-in-law, Dewillis and Rose Currey.

James “Jim” Ascheman, age 86, Clontarf

James “Jim” Ascheman, age 86, died Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Swift County Benson Hospital in Benson, Minnesota.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, October 29, 2014, at the St. Malachy Catholic Church in Clontarf with Fr. Jeremy Kucera officiating.  Burial will be in the St. Malachy Catholic Cemetery near Clontarf.  Visitation will be from 9:00 – 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, October 29, 2014, at the St. Malachy Catholic Church in Clontarf with a Prayer Service and Rosary at 9:30AM.  Arrangements are with the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson, MN.   www.zniewskifuneralhome.com

 
James Joseph Ascheman was born August 15, 1928, in Clontarf Township, Minnesota, the son of Alfred and Vina (Newell) Ascheman.  He was baptized, confirmed, and grew up in Clontarf.  Jim attended school in Canastota, New York and Clontarf, Minnesota before graduating from Agriculture School in Morris.  Jim served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1948 to 1951.  On April 5, 1952, Jim was united in marriage to Carol Spangler at Fort Smith in Arkansas.  This union was blessed with more than 62 years of marriage, three children, and seven grandchildren.  Jim farmed in rural Clontarf, served as City Clerk of Clontarf, and was a Benson School Board Member.  He always enjoyed fishing, four-wheeling, hunting, working, and spending time at their Arkansas and Arizona homes.
 
Jim died on Saturday, October 25, 2014, at the Swift County Benson Hospital in Minnesota.  He attained the age of 86 years, 2 months, and 10 days.
 
Jim is survived by his wife,  Carol Ascheman of Clontarf; children: Gary (Sheila) Ascheman of Willmar, Sonia (Pete) Batinich of Maple Grove, and Karen (Mark) Bertram of Fergus Falls; grandchildren: Landon Ascheman, Amanda Ascheman, Bethany Hardy, Matt Batinich, Nick Batinich, Kim Bertram, and Michael Bertram; siblings: Geneva Cameron of Benson, Don (Bess) Ascheman of Davenport, FL, Mick (Gladys) Ascheman of Lonsdale, Donna (Vernon) Chevalier of Benson, Shirley Schumacher of Amery WI, Pat (Clayton) Staton-Vlasak, Alfred (Jan) Ascheman of New Richmond, WI; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Vina (Newell) Ascheman; mother and father-in law, Mary and George Spangler; brothers, Jack Ascheman and Brother Linus Ascheman.
 
In lieu of flowers memorials are welcome and will be distributed to local charities.

Joan Voorhees, Appleton, 82

The funeral service for Joan Voorhees was held on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at Zion Lutheran Church in Appleton with Pastor Michelle Rowell officiating.  Pati Arnold was the organist and accompanied the congregation in the singing of the hymns.  Jeanette Pfaff sang the special vocal music.
 
Casketbearers were Joan’s grandchildren: Adrienne Mendenhall, Jenna Kettner, Kaitlyn Kettner, Nathaniel Kettner, Janine Schaffer, Jared Voorhees, Joel Voorhees, Michelle Mieka Jo Hoffman, Miranda Arnold, Maggie Chardell, Alison Solma, Chris Pesek, Jamey Pesek and Matthew Pesek.  Interment was in the Appleton City Cemetery.
 
Joan Margaret Voorhees was born June 10, 1932, in Kragero Thownship, Chippewa County, to parents Andrew and Bernice (Sandven) Struxness.  She was baptized and confirmed at Kviteseid Lutheran Church in Milan.  Joan attended country school at District 50 and Milan High School.  On March 9, 1950, Joan was united in marriage to Delmar Ernest Voorhees at Kviteseid Lutheran Church.  This union was blessed with five children and over 64 years of marriage.
 
Del and Joan made their home in Appleton.  Joan worked in the kitchen at the Appleton High School and at Dew Well Lanes drive-in.  Del and Joan also worked together at their greenhouse for a number of years and in 1976, they purchased Dew Well Lanes Bowling Center where they worked together again for 24 years.
 
Joan enjoyed Sewing Club, Milan Birthday Club, Appleton Birthday Club, bowling league and her church circle group.  She was an honorary cancer survivor.  Her many interests include playing cards, camping with family and friends, making quilts for all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spending time with her family.  Joan will be remembered for her beautiful smile and laughter, her caramel roll recipe, coleslaw dressing and vegetable soup.
 
Joan was called home on Tuesday, October 28 at Appleton Area Health Services-Nursing Home.  She had attained the age of 82 years, 4 months, and 18 days.
 
She is survived by her husband, Delmar “Del” of Appleton; five children: Mark (Judy Kammer) Voorhees of Eden Prairie, Cheryl Voorhees of Morris, Ritchie (Mary) Voorhees of Appleton, Mary Jo (Tom) Hoffman of Morris and Bradley Voorhees of Appleton; 14 grandchildren: Adrienne (Ian) Mendenhall, Jenna (Clint Schiller) Kettner, Kaitlyn Kettner, Nathaniel (Angie) Kettner, Janine (Bryan) Schaffer, Jared (Kara) Voorhees, Joel Voorhees, Michelle Mieka Jo (Nathan) Hoffman, Miranda (Ryan) Arnold, Maggie (Ben) Chardell, Chris Pesek, Jamey (Michelle) Pesek, Matthew (Jenny) Pesek, and Alison (Matt) Solma; 23 great-grandchildren: Ruby Mendenhall, Alayna Bjerke, Olivia Kettner, Kylie Forslin, Charlie Taintor, Matthew Rautio, Ariana Kettner, Cameron and Jaxton Kettner, Lilly, Lucy, Lola and Liv Schaffer, Zeek, Nettie and Della Voorhees, Nico and Luca Arnold, Mateja and Chloe Pesek, Riley Madison and Taylor Pesek; her sister, Donna Anderson of Montevideo; brothers and sisters-in-law: Leonard (Margaret) Voorhees, Jerry (Janet) Voorhees, and Ward (Carol) Voorhees; many nieces and nephews and her loving Yorkie, Trixie.
 
She is preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Matthew Kettner, infant sister, Arlys; brother-in-law, Elwood Anderson; brothers and sisters-in-law: Bill and Irene Voorhees, Richard and Harriet Voorhees, Donald and Eunice Voorhees, Max Voorhees, Norman and Catherine Voorhees and Pauline Voorhees.

Sanford “Sandy” Larson, age 82, of Benson, formerly of Willmar

NOTE NEW FUNERAL DATE:  Sanford “Sandy” Larson, age 82, of Benson, formerly of Willmar, died Friday morning, November 7, on the family farm near Benson.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, November 11, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. 

Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Willmar with military honors provided by Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post #167 of Willmar.  Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday, November 10, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar (www.petersonbrothers.com) and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Sanford Dean Larson was born October 26, 1932, in Benson, Minnesota, the son of Sidney and Gunda (Bjorke) Larson.  He grew up and was baptized into the Lutheran faith in Benson and graduated from Benson High in 1950.  He then worked at Erickson’s Furniture in Willmar and on the family farm.  In 1953, he joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War until his discharge in May 1955.  On November 25, 1955, he married Barbara Skare in Benson and they made their home in Willmar, where Sandy worked at Montgomery Ward.  In March 1959, he began a 34 year career as a police officer with the Willmar Police Department.  Sandy attended investigation training at Northwestern University in Chicago and was one of the first officers to be involved in the D.A.R.E. Program in Willmar.  He retired from the police department on July 2, 1993.  Sandy also served in the 825th Supply Company of the U.S. Army Reserve from 1975 to 1993.
Sandy will be remembered as a kind and compassionate man, who was always willing to help anyone.  He was a comedian and loved telling stories.  He enjoyed fishing, wood-working, playing cards, visiting with family and friends, and spending his retirement on the family farm.  He was also a big fan of the Green Bay Packers and John Deere farm equipment.
He is survived by two daughters, Pam (and Mark) Sward of Willmar and Patty (and Mark) Brenner of Kerkhoven; seven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; special friend, Mary Tewes of Willmar; and other relatives and friends.

Helen Riley, 79, of Murdock

Helen Riley, 79, of Murdock and owner of Riley Bus Service died on Saturday, November 8th at her home in Murdock.  Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, November 13th, at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock with Fr. Jeremy Kucera officiating.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, 5 to 7 PM, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the parish prayer service at 5:45 PM.  Visitation will continue one hour prior to Mass on Thursday morning.  Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson is handling the arrangements.  www.zniewskifuneralhome.com
Helen Anne Riley was born September 6, 1935, at Frederic, Wisconsin to parents Clarence and Hazel (Rundblade) Krattenmaker.  She grew up in Murdock and graduated from Murdock High School.  After high school Helen attended the Minnesota School of Business for two years.
On September 7, 1957, she was united in marriage to Glenn Jerome Riley at Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Fr. Smith.  Helen was owner, secretary and tour guide for Riley Bus Service for many years.
Helen was active in her church by serving on the Altar and Rosary Society and was Catechism teacher for 15 years.  She was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.  Helen enjoyed dancing, reading, traveling, and going on casino tours.
Helen died in her home at Murdock on Saturday morning, November 8, 2014.  She had attained 79 years, 2 months and 2 days of age.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn; four children: Kari (Michael) Smith of Blaine, Kathy (Scott) Lepak of Andover, Kevin (DeAnna) Riley of Murdock, and Kristi Riley and her husband Chris Fairchild of Andover; six grandchildren: Emily Smith, Jordan (Alex) Riley, Kate Bauer and her husband Randy Muehlbauer, Kelsey Riley, Brianne (Austin) Plowman, and Chloe Fairchild; three great-grandchildren: Talen Riley, William Riley and Noah Plowman; her sister, Maxine Helgeson of Coon Rapids; brother-in-law, James Riley of Hutchinson; and several other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Hazel Krattenmaker, and her sister-in-law Patricia Riley.

Jay B. Rist, age 49, of Waite Park, formerly of Benson

Jay B. Rist, age 49, of Waite Park, MN, died Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 16th at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Saint Cloud.  Visitation will be an hour prior to the service.  Pastor Dee Pederson will officiate.  Burial will be at a later date.
Jay was born May 19, 1965 in Benson, Minnesota to Ted and Eloise Rist.  He graduated from Benson High School.  He earned a certificate in automotive mechanics from St. Cloud Vo-Tech and worked in the automotive industry for several years with the majority of his career at Foreign Auto Service.
Jay enjoyed spending time with his family, watching NASCAR and sports, caring for pets, working on his bikes and casual walks around the pond with his music.  He was a kind, quiet person with a generous heart and a hug for everyone.
Jay is survived by his daughter, Michelle (Quintin) Brown of Fairbanks, AL; grandchildren, Krystalynn, Katelynn, Jeremiah, and Korbin; mother, Eloise Rist of Waite Park, MN; father, Ted (Elaine) Rist of Billings, MT; brothers, Todd Rist of Prior Lake, MN and Jon (Lisa) Rist of St. Cloud, MN;  nieces, Abigail, Madison and Zoe; nephews, Brett, Dain, Nicholas, Tanner and Vail; great nephew Mason; great nieces, Vayda and Evelyn.

Phyllis Dorothy Petrick, 93, Benson

Phyllis Dorothy Petrick, 93, died Friday, October 17, 2014 at the Golden Living Center – Meadow Lane in Benson, Minnesota.  
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 23, 2014, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Holloway with Rev. Don Klatt officiating.  Visitation was from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson with a prayer service at 7 p.m.  Visitation continued for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery.   
Phyllis Dorothy Petrick was born June 2, 1921, in Milbank, South Dakota, the daughter of Fred and Amelia (Adler) Schmidt.  She graduated from Appleton High School.  
May 12, 1946, Phyllis was united in marriage to Merlyn August Petrick in Holloway, Minnesota.  This union was blessed with more than 62 years of marriage, three children, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.  Over the years, she lived in Holloway, rural Holloway, rural Danvers, and Benson.  
Phyllis was called from this life  Friday, October 17, 2014.  She attained the age of 93 years, four months and 15 days.  
Phyllis is survived by her children: Linda (special friend, Charles Weinhold) Petrick of Minneapolis, Randy (Deborah) Petrick of Clear Lake, SD, and Dennis (special friend, Nancy Arne) Petrick of Danvers; grandchildren: Jamie Petrick, Ross Petrick, Paul Petrick and Erin Honebrink; great-grandchildren: Cole Petrick, Caden Petrick, Easton Petrick, Grayson Petrick, Lucy Petrick, Adlai Honebrink, and Emma Petrick; and many other relatives and friends.  
She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Amelia Schmidt; husband Merlyn in 2009, and siblings: Myra, Iva, Alvin and Orville.
Arrangements were with the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson, MN.

Shelby J. Larson, 83 of Benson

Shelby J. Larson, 83 of Benson, died Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.  Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 14, 2014 at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church in Benson.  Visitation will be from 5:00 – 8:00 pm. Thursday at the church and for one hour prior to the service.  Funeral arrangement are with the West Central Cremation Service.  www.hafh.org
 
Shelby Jerome Larson was born on May 26, 1931 in Benson, the son of Louie and Olivia (Rear) Larson.  He grew up on the family farm in Swenoda Township where he attended country grade school in District # 91.  On January 10, 1954, Shelby was united in marriage to Lois Reinhart at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Watson.  They made their home in Minneapolis and later Maple Grove where he was self-employed installing ceramic tile.  In 1972, they bought the family farm and returned to Benson where he farmed and installed tile, retiring in 2010.
 
Shelby was a member of Our Redeemers Lutheran Church and Fraternal Order of Eagles.  He enjoyed watching the Twins and Vikings, bowling, golfing, horseshoes, snowmobiling and playing softball in his younger years.  He shared a birthday with John Wayne and was an avid fan. He loved spending time with family and friends, especially sharing with them his passion for fireworks over the Fourth of July and Sunday dinners prior to watching football. In his later years he enjoyed traveling on family vacation.  He is remembered as hard working, a devoted husband and caring father and grandfather.
 
Shelby died on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 83.  He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lois; children, Shelly (Gordy) Pribyl of Annandale, Bruce (Julie) Larson of Glenwood, Neil Larson of Benson, Kevin (Pamela) Larson of Kerkhoven and David (Sandra) Larson of Danvers; six grandchildren, Derick Senkyr, Louie Larson, Darcie Larson, Lyndon Larson, Benjamin Larson Cody Larson and Morgen Tangen and seven great-grandchildren.
 
Shelby was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Lowell and Richard.

Rudolph (Rudy) O. Halverson, 49, of Willmar

Rudolph (Rudy) O. Halverson, 49, of Willmar, Minnesota  died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar.
Rudy’s graveside burial service was held at the St. Malachy’s Catholic Cemetery in Clontarf, Monday, Nov. 10 at 10:30 a.m.
Rudy O. Halverson was born  August 25, 1965, in Willmar the son of Rudolph and Maryanne (Nelson) Halverson.   He grew up in Benson and graduated from Benson High School and then attended Willmar Vo-Tech.  Rudy was employed as a painter for several area businesses & helped friends with their painting businesses as well. In his younger years, he loved traveling & telling stories!
He enjoyed camping, playing dominos, cards, his canine companions (Shadow-black lab & Buck-yellow lab) and being with his friends. He lived in Arizona & California, until moving back to Minnesota & enjoyed more camping & painting jobs! One job he took proud of, was at Diamond Vogel in downtown Willmar.
Rudy was released from Rice Hospital in mid-June, and was taken to Wabasso's Golden Living Center until being brought back to Willmar October 15, when he moved into Bethesda Heritage. Caron Wartman became his guardian (mid-June) and they'd been friends for many years! They thought of each other as sister and brother, more than friends! After church October 22, she went to visit Rudy at Bethesda Heritage and had some conversation with him and she realized it was his final hours approaching and decided to stay.
He was preceded in death by his parents (Rudolph & MaryAnne), grandparents (Granny-Irene Nelson) and brother, Dana. He will be missed by many friends.

Esther Nelson, age 94, formerly of Benson, died Sunday, November 16th, in Minneapolis.  Funeral services will be held Friday, November 21st at 11:00AM, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson, with Pastor Art Wiese officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.  Burial will follow at the Benson City Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Zniewski Funeral Home- Benson.

Darl Wayne Cleland, 77, of Glenwood

Darl Wayne Cleland, 77, of Glenwood, passed away at the St. Cloud Hospital, Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014, surrounded by family.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m. at Starbuck Community Center, 307 East 5th St, Starbuck, Minnesota.  Pastor Becky Worner of Shalom Community Lutheran Church will officiate the service. A private burial will be held at a later date.
He was born in Fonda, Iowa, to Raymond and Lyra Cleland. The family moved to a farm near Danvers in 1951. He graduated from Benson High School in 1956, married in 1958 and had four children. He farmed near Danvers until 1965, when the family moved to Hoffman.
Darl worked as a salesman for Occo Feeds for many years before operating Cleland’s Meet N Eat in Hoffman. After moving to Glenwood in 1982, he began working for Osborne Industries until retiring in 2007.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing dice, dominoes and card games with family and friends. His hearty laugh will be remembered by many. He loved to help others, no matter what, and his garage was the Home Depot of the neighborhood.
He had many martin houses and loved his birds. He was known for pulling your leg, jokes and stories and would strike up a conversation with anyone. He was a friend to all and inspiration to many.
He is survived by his wife, Alice, of Glenwood; his children, David (Maura) Cleland of San Diego, Calif., Julie (Paul) Heuer of Fargo, N.D., Daniel (Lori) Cleland of Big Lake and Donald (Sharon) Cleland of Parker, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Fred, Bonnie (Red) Jaeger, Denny (Cheri) and George (Barb); and sisters in-law, Doris and Darlene.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard and Bill; sister in-law, Lynn; and wife, Donna.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Lung Association.

Sade O. Ladd, age 102, of Starbuck, MN, and formerly of Benson

Sade O. Ladd, age 102, of Starbuck, MN, and formerly of Benson, MN, died Thursday, November 20, 2014, at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck.  Private family funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 23, with Rev. Rebecca Worner officiating.  Interment was in the Benson City Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Sade Ladd died Thursday morning, November 20th, at Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, MN.  She was born January 10, 1912 in Sleepy Eye, MN to Hannah (Wandersee) and William Lange.  Sade grew up in Sleepy Eye and attended Sleepy Eye High High School.  She was united in marriage to Jasper Arthur Ladd on July 29, 1932 in Emmitsburg, Iowa. 
Sade and Jasper moved to Benson in 1932 and purchased the Morris Hatchery in 1938.  In 1952, the couple purchased a farm and built their home south of Benson.  Sade worked full time at the hatchery and participated in all areas of farming including plowing, harvesting and driving trucks.  Sade and Jasper retired from farming in 1979.  They enjoyed 65 years of marriage before Jasper's death in 1997.
Sade was a member of Our Redeemers Lutheran Church in Benson.  She and Jasper loved traveling, hunting, fishing, shell collecting and rock collecting.  They frequently brought their children, nieces, friends and grandchildren on summer trips around the United States.
Sade is survived by two daughters, Joann Janet Frantum of Pemberton and Kahla Maureen Ladd of Glenwood; nine grandchildren; 14 great granchildren and six great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Jasper; one daughter, Patricia Mae; one grandchild, Daniel Grote; one son-in-law; one granddaughter-in-law; and one granddaughter.

LaVon Gunderson, of Montevideo, died Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 92.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday November 26, 2014 at 11:00 am at Big Bend Lutheran Church.   Rev. Keith Long will officiate and interment will be in Big Bend Cemetery. 
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Betty Petersen, 80, of Clara City died Sunday, November 23rd at the Clara City Care Center.  Funeral services will be held at 11 am Wednesday, November 26th at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City.  Burial will be held in Louriston Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.  In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to either the Alzheimer’s Association of MN or to the Rice Hospice. Arrangements are with the Wing-Bain Funeral Home of Clara City for Betty Petersen.

Jessie Anderson, of Benson died Wednesday, November 26, 2014, at the Swift County Benson Hospital.  Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 29, 2014, at the Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Interment will be in the Lake Hazel Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Friday, November 28, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church and for one hour prior to the service at the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Lake Hazel Lutheran Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Zniewski Funeral Home.

Esther A. Monson of Benson

Funeral services for Esther A. Monson of Benson were held Tuesday, November 25, at 11 a.m., at the West Zion Lutheran Church in rural Hancock.  Visitation was held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.  Tuesday before the service.
Esther Agnes Monson, 81, was born in Kerkhoven,  July 26, 1933, the daughter of John Axel and Katrina Johanna Linnea Johnson Magnusson.  She was baptized and confirmed at West Zion Lutheran Church.  She graduated from Kerkhoven High School.  
December 6, 1952, Esther was united in marriage to Harlan Dwayne Monson at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.  
She enjoyed spending time with her family and sewing.  She lived on a farm in Hoff Township, Pope County, in Clontarf, and Benson.  
Esther was called from this life  Wednesday, November 19, 2014, at the Northridge Care Center in Minneapolis.

She is survived by her children: Steve (Janet) Monson of Maple Grove, Sheryl (Gus) Kaubisch, of Hackensack, Shannon (Kyle) Wilberg of Grand Rapids, and Sheldon Monson of Crystal; seven  grandchildren: Marc, Sean, Marissa, Katrina, Scarlett, Drew, and Juliann; three great grandchildren, Jack, Ty, and Kabron; brothers and sisters Karen Preker, John (Sachico) Magnusson, and Linda Magnusson; and many other relatives and friends.  
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Katrina, her husband Harlan, siblings John Edwin, Ingrid, Greta, Evelyn, and Mae.
